Lisbon vs Porto: Why choose Lisbon?

As the capital, Lisbon is the heartthrob of Portugal so it gives all the big-city vibes. What I enjoyed most about this bustling city is that it really comes to life at night and during the day, there are plenty of different museums, castles, and neighborhoods to explore— making it the perfect blend of cultural gems and electrifying nightlife. Compared to Porto, it's hillier and larger, but the city center is pretty walkable. To get a better feel of the city and to avoid the steep hills, I’d recommend hopping on one of the iconic trams to explore.

So, if you’re a night owl with a taste for adventure, here are a few reasons why Lisbon just may be the perfect place for you!

Lisbon highlights

Foodie Haven

From trendy rooftop restaurants to hidden gems serving up traditional flavors - if you're a foodie, you won't be disappointed. Don't miss the Time Out Market, a vibrant food hall with over 20+ vendors from around the world, giving you a global culinary experience under one roof. Speaking of delicious food, you can’t take a trip to Portugal without tasting their most popular pastry - the Pastel de Nata. Every bakery has them, and for good reason - they're a delicious taste of Portuguese tradition. But if you're like me and love venturing off the beaten path - try my personal fav, the Bishop: a local Portuguese pastry with a coconut twist.

Nightlife Capital of Europe

Party until the sun comes up in Barrio Alto, Lisbon's legendary bar-hopping neighborhood. With over 100 bars in one area, you'll have endless options to dance your heart out 'till dawn. Feeling fancy? Sip cocktails with stunning panoramic views from SEEN, on the 9th floor of the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, or soak in the rooftop vibes at Topo Martim Moniz.

Rich History Beyond the Buzz

Although Lisbon's nightlife is legendary, there's so much more to this captivating city than just dancing till dawn. Set aside some time in your itinerary to explore its rich history at Sao Jorge Castle or marvel at the Gulbenkian Museum's art treasures.

And the most memorable part of Lisbon? The street art. Lisbon's soul truly lies in its streets, they're like open-air galleries showcasing vibrant street art that tells the city's story in bold colors. And while you're soaking in this artistic tapestry, don't miss the iconic landmarks: the Lisbon Cathedral, the Museum of Ancient Art, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Jerónimos Monastery.

Overall, If you crave a city that never sleeps, where delicious food, history, and vibrant nightlife collide, then Lisbon awaits you with open arms!

Lisbon vs Porto: Why choose Porto?

Swapping the bustling heartbeat of Lisbon for Porto's charming soul offers a distinct Portuguese experience. While Lisbon thrives on big-city energy, Porto embraces a laid-back, walkable atmosphere. Imagine strolling cobbled streets painted with iconic blue tiles, soaking up stunning Douro River views, and sipping world-renowned Port wine – that's the beauty of Porto!

Porto Highlights

Unwind in Walkable Streets

If you crave a slower pace and appreciate unique charm, you’ll fall in love with Porto. Unlike Lisbon's sprawling avenues packed with tourists, Porto's compact center lets you explore hidden gems on foot. While the city is great for walking, be sure to bring comfy shoes because there are quite a few hills and steps to climb. Start by climbing up the Clérigos Tower for panoramic city views, or take a leisurely stroll along the Douro River for breathtaking views and insta-worthy photos. For me, Porto felt much safer compared to Lisbon so don't be afraid to get lost in the narrow alleys—chances are, you’ll spend your day discovering local boutiques and stumbling upon cozy cafes as you admire the Douro River.

Wine & Dine on a Budget

Porto won't break the bank! Compared to Lisbon, it's a more affordable city, offering delicious local bites and delightful cafes along its charming streets. No trip to Porto is complete without indulging in Port wine! With cellars offering tastings for just €5, you can explore the sweet and dry varieties and discover your new favorite sip.

Insta-worthy Moments on Every Corner

Forget filters! Porto's real magic lies in the unexpected beauty waiting around every corner. My favorite spots? The São Bento Train Station, the Livraria Lello bookstore, and the Sé Cathedral— all create stunning backdrops for your travel photos. Imagine strolling along the Douro River, snapping Instagram-worthy photos of the iconic blue-tiled houses, and getting lost in the maze-like streets without the feeling of being overwhelmed. Let yourself get lost (trust me, half the fun is finding your way back!), and soak in the real, unfiltered beauty of this captivating city.

Overall, Porto's charm lies in its laid-back atmosphere, walkable streets, and wine-soaked soul. If you crave a city that invites you to slow down, savor the scenery, and appreciate the finer things, Porto is waiting to enchant you with its magic.

Making Your Choice

Lisbon and Porto: two vibrant cities, each with its own unique charm and personality. Choosing between them can be tough, but the good news is you can't go wrong! Honestly, if you have the time, I recommend visiting both. With Contiki, your entire trip is planned, you'll be surrounded by friends who love to travel just as much as you, and you'll see all the highlights of Portugal, including everything I've raved about in this blog (Click here to check them out!). But if you absolutely have to choose between the two…
